All were founded in the early 14th century. Lincoln’s Inn is able to trace its official records back farthest, but by tradition, none of the Inns claims to be the oldest of the four. It is believed to be named for Lincoln de Lacy, the third Earl of Lincoln. The Gatehouse is the oldest existing part of the Inn, and was built in the early 16th century.
